You say a lot here that I agree with. Technology gives us opportunities, sometimes amazing opportunities that just didn't exist before. It enables us to do new things that drive learning or to do old things better. But within individual lessons we have to start with the language aim. Just as when using coursebooks - identify the aims of the lesson and then think "how can the material in this unit/this app help me to achieve those aims?". And then of course we have to be willing to veer from that during the lesson if need be. There's nothing wrong with (most) coursebooks and nothing wrong with using tech per se but they must be our slaves not our masters!

So basically I'm just agreeing with you!

nice to read a critcial piece on IATEFL conference not read many if in fact any. (though you could read my critical post here http://wp.me/pgHyE-5X)

i think that maybe a lot of teachers presenting tech related stuff assume that teachers will adapt the technology as fits their teaching approach and pedagogy?

i know that trying to filter the vast amount of tech related stuff is hard so having someone do that is useful.

Superb post, Paul.

I've been hazily reading some of the conference reports and while they have all been really interesting, I found this to be the most aligned with my thinking (and ranting)!

I don't much like the whole move into edtech (or actually CALL referred to as edtech, rather than it actually being educational technology) without the taking of the time for pedagogical rationale - (actually why I'm studying this); dislike the "this has bells and whistles" approach, so now it must be a fantastic learning tool; don't care much for "the teens use games so we can adapt the most random game to teach English with," whether or not they need the language, theme" (or, indeed, the lack of understanding the difference between gaming, game based learning and gamification) - and while I do believe that there will be an inevitable shift towards mobile technologies (of their various shapes and formats) within the coming years, die each time I open up, to try out, an app that sets out to "teach" English through (again) forced lexical sets of useless or non-existent contexts.

While I agree that technology is good, the danger is that teachers are becoming too dependent on it.
